Fairley Star Baground

Fairley Leadership is delighted to have Ross McPherson in the role of Patron, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise.

Fairley Leadership began in 1997 as a result of Ross participating in the Williamson Community Leadership Program (now known as Leadership Victoria) and former GOTAFE principal, Peter Ryan, participating in the Australian Rural Leadership Program. On their return, they gathered together a group of local business and community people interested in addressing the need for leadership across the region.

Ross McPherson is a well-known local businessperson. He is the Executive Chair and Editor-in-Chief of the McPherson Media Group, publisher of the Shepparton News and other regional titles.

He pursued mixed careers of law and journalism after studying law at Melbourne and London Universities. He edited the Melbourne University newspaper Farrago, worked for the Aboriginal Legal Aid Service in Alice Springs and wrote for a London newspaper before returning to Melbourne to practice law.

Since returning to his family business in 1980, Ross has been involved in many community activities, particularly in education and river management. He helped establish Fairley Leadership and chaired it for its first 10 years and was a director of SPC Ardmona for a similar period.

A founding director of the Goulburn Valley Community Fund he also chairs the Goulburn Valley Hospital Foundation. He was also co-convenor of Foodbowl Unlimited and a founding director of the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project.

Ross is a director and past president of the International News Media Association and a member of the Melbourne University Council.
